Turn off the water supply by closing the cold water shutoff valve above the water heater.

Shut off the power or gas:

Electric: Turn the water heater breaker OFF.

Gas: Turn the gas control valve to OFF. If you smell gas, leave the home immediately and call your gas utility.

If the leak continues, turn off your home's main water supply.
- Contain the water with towels or a bucket if it is safe to do so.

Call a licensed plumber to inspect and repair or replace the water heater.
Important: Do not restore power to an electric water heater until it has been repaired or replaced and the tank is completely full of water.

How to Shut Off the Water Supply to Your Home

Find the customer shutoff valve in the flower bed or near the front property line. Turn the valve clockwise or rotate the lever 90° to stop the water.

If there isn't a customer shutoff, locate the water meter box near the street and use a water meter key to turn the meter valve 90° until the water is off.

Can't shut it off? Contact your local water utility. If the leak is causing severe flooding or creating an immediate safety hazard, call the fire department for emergency assistance.

After the water is off, turn off your water heater (if necessary) and call a licensed plumber to repair the leak.

How to Flush a Tankless Water Heater

Turn the unit OFF and shut off the gas or power.

Close the hot and cold isolation valves.

Connect a flush kit to the service ports.

Circulate vinegar or descaling solution through the unit for 45–60 minutes.

Flush with clean water for 5–10 minutes.

Reconnect everything, open the isolation valves, restore power or gas, and verify proper operation.
What You'll Need Tankless water heater flush kit (hoses and pump) 5-gallon bucket 2–4 gallons of white vinegar or manufacturer-approved descaling solution Adjustable pliers Step 1: Turn Off the Water Heater Turn the unit OFF. Shut off the gas supply or electrical power. Step 2: Close the Water Valves Close the cold water inlet and hot water outlet isolation valves. Step 3: Connect the Flush Kit Remove the caps from the service ports. Connect the hoses from the pump and bucket to the hot and cold service ports. Step 4: Flush the System Fill the bucket with vinegar or descaling solution. Turn on the pump and circulate the solution through the heater for 45–60 minutes. Step 5: Rinse the Heater Empty the bucket and refill it with clean water. Pump clean water through the unit for 5–10 minutes to rinse away any remaining solution. Step 6: Restore Service Disconnect the hoses. Replace the service port caps. Open the hot and cold isolation valves. Restore gas or electrical power. Turn the unit back on and verify normal operation. Safety Tip Always follow your manufacturer's maintenance instructions.
