Regulatory Oversight
Licensed plumbers are regulated by the Plumbing Board. If a customer files a complaint, the Board WILL investigate!
Written & Hands on Exam
Candidates must pass both a written, knowledge-based exam as well as hands-on practical exam where they must assemble common material and plumb a miniature house.
Classroom Training
In addition to on-the-job training, Apprentices must complete:
24 Hours of in Class training (Tradesman)
48 Hours of in Class training (Journeyman)
Field experience
Apprentices must obtain on the job training in order to qualify for an exam: 4,000 hours for a Tradesman exam
8,000 hours for a Journeyman exam
Fingerprints
ALL apprentices and license holders have submitted fingerprints for a nationwide FBI background check.

The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners Was formed in 1947. Due to catastrophes that occurred in the early 1900's which resulted in mass casualties, when modern plumbing practices were still being developed, State legislators decided to establish an agency to regulate the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems.
